El Portal Art Fair

Show Recap

After a successful turnout in their first year, the El Portal Art Fair returned this past weekend for another round of tasty food, live music and family-friendly activities. Live!’s student bands were invited to perform, and 7 different groups provided the sounds throughout the day-long affair.

A variety of age ranges and musical styles were on display, with bands from Live 1, 2 and 3 churning out tunes from pop-rock artists Coldplay and No Doubt to jazz and funk tracks from Snarky Puppy and Hiatus Kaiyote.

Some of the day’s most memorable moments included an adorable mashup of "Mony Mony" and "You Really Got Me" by Live 1, a fun and unexpected medley of Michael Jackson hits performed by Live 2, and a beautifully haunting rendition of Tedeschi Trucks Band’s "Midnight in Harlem" by Live 3.

Re-live some of the musical magic that took place during this year’s El Portal Art Fair with some performances by Live Bands below:

We were also lucky to be treated by a special set from the Live! Adults program, who closed out the show with Amy Winehouse’s "Valerie", Journey’s "Lights", and the Joan Jett classic, "I Love Rock and Roll".

Exceptional performances and tons of smiling faces would be an accurate way to sum up the day, but there was one element that made this show feel a bit different: the way students and their families came out to support one another - sticking it out till the end on a 90°F day - was a testament to the sense of community that exists amongst the Live! family. Anyone witnessing the energy between all the friends, family and performers could feel the expression of camaraderie and joy as they cheered each other on, celebrating in each other’s success.

We want to thank El Portal task force, specially Janis Koch for making us a part of this beautiful annual event.
