Jane Rose Cohen
Live! teachers have been able to take the shy and the timid and turn them into stage-ready vessels of destruction (that means they play music really really well). So it makes you wonder: What's so scary about auditions anyway? Ask any Live! student that has auditioned in one of these schools before, and they will tell you, Nothing.
Jane Cohen, a Live! student who did audition prep with us and has recently gotten accepted into MAC, tells us a bit about her experience:
You just got into Miami Arts Charter - congratulations! What made you consider applying to MAC?
I considered applying when we had learned more about the art schools. I wanted to be with more like-minded people. I really want to spend more time focusing on my music and singing.
What was the audition process like? How did the school receive your audition?
The audition process was very time-consuming and took lots of hard work. I was very focused and took lots of time to practice. The teacher received my audition very well. She seemed very impressed with my portfolio, thanks to Live! and my band. She smiled the whole time and said many positive comments - she seemed wowed by my performance.
What kind of preparation did you undergo for your audition?
The preparation I went through took lots of effort. I went home from school everyday, warmed up my voice and sang my audition song over and over again on keys and practiced how I would perform it in front of Mrs. De La Rosa. I had little doubt in myself about the audition - it came back to me in return.
Has your acceptance sparked more inspiration in you as a musician?
Yes! By encouraging me to practice more. It also gave me more courage performing in front of people.
I've heard you perform before - you're great! What do you want to do with your music long-term?
I'd like to create a career as a singer-songwriter, writer, and musician. I am very positive about practicing and working hard in band and as an instrumentalist. Every day my life involves music and I'm very proud of it.
Anything else you'd like to say?
Inspiration is hard to find, even if you are in the middle of an ocean surrounded by creatures. I've dreamed of writing and singing for my entire life. I haven't really written and recorded more than 5 or 6 songs, but that's all because of inspiration. I'm not so sure if those last sentences really make sense, but they mean something, for sure.
